The Bródno Jewish Cemetery, founded in 1780 by banker Szmul Zbytkower on the right bank of the Vistula River, is the oldest Jewish cemetery still in existence in Warsaw. With nearly 250,000 burials until 1940, it bears witness to the rich history of Warsaw’s Jewish community since the late 18th century. After the Holocaust, the site bore the marks of destruction and desecration for a long time, even undergoing a communist project to transform it into a park, which threatened its very existence. Restoration campaigns carried out since the 1980s, and intensified after 2012, have made it possible to preserve this place of remembrance. The opening of the Beit Almin pavilion now features a permanent exhibition on Jewish funeral rites and the history of the cemetery. Closed to burials since 1940, the site has become a place of contemplation where figures such as Abraham Stern, mathematician and inventor of calculating machines, are laid to rest.

Le cimetière juif de Bródno, fondé en 1780 par le banquier Szmul Zbytkower sur la rive droite de la Vistule, constitue le plus ancien cimetière juif encore existant à Varsovie. Ayant accueilli près de 250 000 sépultures jusqu’en 1940, il témoigne de la riche histoire de la communauté juive varsovienne depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Après la Shoah, le site porta longtemps les traces de destructions et de profanations, subissant même un projet communiste de transformation en parc qui menaça son existence. Les campagnes de restauration menées depuis les années 1980, puis intensifiées après 2012, ont permis de sauvegarder ce lieu de mémoire. L’ouverture du pavillon Beit Almin présente désormais une exposition permanente sur les rites funéraires juifs et l’histoire du cimetière. Ce site, fermé aux inhumations depuis 1940, est devenu un espace de recueillement où reposent notamment des figures comme Abraham Stern, mathématicien et inventeur de machines à calculer.
